The print and poster entries in this online catalogue follow the documentation and comments published in the authoritative book:

Mary Lee Corlett. The Prints of Roy Lichtenstein: A Catalogue Raisonné, 1948–1993, 2nd ed. New York: Hudson Hills Press in association with the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., 2002 (Corlett 2002). First published in 1994 (Corlett 1994). Introduction by Ruth E. Fine (Fine 1994a).

Corlett documented 311 editioned prints and posters by Lichtenstein produced from 1948 through 1997, with three works published in 1998 after the artist’s death: RLCR 4622, 4755, and 4752. Along with them, Corlett documented select posters, announcements, and other printed works in unspecified editions (totaling 76 items); these were either designed by the artist or based on the artist’s designs, or reproductions approved in collaboration with the artist. Prints not documented by Corlett (RLCR 999, 1178, 3625, 3664, 4685, 357, 4195, and 3884) were added to this digital catalogue raisonné. Reproductions are no longer included, only references to them per Corlett or in added commentaries.

The individual online entries’ style and structure closely follow Corlett 2002 and differ slightly from all other entries except for small style changes made for consistency.

All prints or poster impressions formerly or currently in the artist’s estate were re-photographed by the Roy Lichtenstein Foundation for this online publication to provide the best image quality. Impressions or objects in other collections are reproduced with the best available imagery. Some entries are still illustrated with the images Corlett's book provided, mostly photographs of impressions in the collection of the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C. Illustrations of woodblocks and other print matrices, as well as print variants, such as different states (RLCR 217, St. George and the Dragon (I) [Killing the Dragon]), ink color variants (RLCR 289, Hunter with Dog), paper color variants (RLCR 269, Approaching the Castle) and teaching aides (RLCR 2871, American Indian Theme I), have been added as Research Images when mentioned in the entry and/or when discovered and available....

Remarks

This print/poster was published to announce Lichtenstein's second solo exhibition at Leo Castelli Gallery, September 28–October 24, 1963 (1963c New York Castelli). The date is usually given as 1964, and the numbered impressions are so inscribed. It is possible CRAK! was also produced as a mailer, but none have been found and no other written documentation has been located.

In addition to this numbered edition, there are at least five subtly different versions on at least two different papers. In all versions, the image dimensions are very close, if not identical:

1) There is a poster version, published by Leo Castelli Gallery and printed by Colorcraft, New York, on a lightweight wove paper. It has small typesetting [Leo Castelli Gallery • Lithographed by Total Color, New York] lower right, directly beneath the image, plus exhibition information [Roy Lichtenstein • September 28–October 24, 1963 • Leo Castelli 4 E. 77 N.Y.] printed in large type across the bottom margin. The poster (full sheet) measures 21 1/8 x 28 1/2 inches (53.6 x 72.4 cm).

2) There are an unknown number of signed ([rf Lichtenstein] lower right) and unnumbered impressions without the exhibition information. One such impression is known to be on lightweight wove paper, with the small typesetting identifying Leo Castelli Gallery and Total Color (as described above). Sheet dimensions for this version: 19 7/8 x 28 7/16 inches (50.7 x 72.2 cm).

3) Signed and unnumbered impressions, as described in 2, but without the small typesetting, also exist. The numbered impressions that have been located do not have the small typesetting described above, but there is no way to ascertain whether the numbered edition is consistent in this respect.

4) Shortly after, or simultaneously with, the production of the Castelli poster, Poster Originals, Ltd., was authorized to publish the poster on a medium-weight, smooth wove paper and without the small typesetting directly beneath the image. Subtle differences exist between the Leo Castelli Gallery publication and the Poster Originals publication. The color separations were obviously different for each; for example, the Castelli poster has smaller red dots, and the yellow areas are slightly different in each version. This poster (full sheet) measures 21 1/32 x 28 1/2 inches (53.3 x 72.4 cm).

5) Signed ([rf Lichtenstein] lower right) and unnumbered impressions, as described in 4, but without any typesetting, also exist, one of which is reproduced here. Sheet dimensions: 19 7/16 x 27 1/2 inches (49.4 x 69.9 cm).

There may have been an unauthorized version of this image produced during the late 1960s or early 1970s, but no further information has been confirmed about it.

CRAK! and RLCR 759, Crying Girl were produced for the same Leo Castelli Gallery exhibition.
