Ceramic

In this catalogue, works classified as ceramic are made of clay and fired to form a solid, vitrified material.

Ceramic (unique)

In the mid-1960s, Lichtenstein worked with fellow Douglass College professor and ceramic artist Ka Kwong Hui on his unique ceramic sculptures of female busts and dishware. He turned to Hui after failed experiments glazing the busts with an unknown Brooklyn potter. Hui helped complete the busts and worked closely with Lichtenstein on his dishware sculptures. They cast the dish forms from molds purchased from Stewart Clay Company and Holland Mold Company, New York, as well as from proprietary molds, and together devised new ways of applying glaze dot patterns (Glenn, C. 1977b).

Other unique ceramics include prototypes for dishware produced by Durable Dish Co. and Rosenthal GmbH (see below) and two hand-decorated plates for a benefit event.

For a selection of ceramics abandoned by the artist before completion, see Various Other Works.

Ceramic (editioned)

Lichtenstein’s designs for dishware and one “mobile” are presented without documentation of all individual works in the edition, as only select pieces were examined. Location information is not provided unless a work is known to be in a museum collection. Information is usually based on fabricator papers (RLF Archives) and the authors’ research.

Conception date is based on the year a prototype, prepared by the fabricator for the artist’s approval, was completed. Publication date follows the conception date in parentheses.

Ceramic (trials)

Works classified as ceramic (trials) are test pieces for editions produced by the fabricator.

Media Lines

Media lines indicate if pieces were glazed or painted and whether the work is earthenware, high-fired ceramic (i.e., either stoneware or porcelain), or porcelain when known from documentation.
Excluded are methods of shaping the clay and applying glaze. Most pieces were cast in molds.

Dimensions

For plates and shallow bowls, only diameter is given. For all other works, dimensions are given in order: height x width x depth. In some cases only height was known; the dimension is preceded by "H."

See 10. DIMENSIONS.

Remarks

This set of dishware was commissioned by Audrey Sabol and Joan Kron, co-founders of the Durable Dish Company. As Joan Kron recalled in 2013, they were inspired to contact Lichtenstein after seeing the artist’s 1965 exhibition (1965b New York Castelli) featuring small sculptures of stacked cups and saucers (Joan Kron, "Pop Go the Dishes: The History of Roy Lichtenstein's 1966 Durable Dishes," unpublished manuscript, 2013, RLF Archives). While Lichtenstein initially created prototypes with a three-color design (RLCR 1217), it proved too complicated for the Jackson China Company to produce. The decision was made to use only black (letter from Jackson China Company to Constance Glenn, October 7, 1976, RLF Archives). As a result, the design was also changed for these mono-color dishes. In 1966, each six-piece place setting was priced at $50 and available for purchase at the Leo Castelli Gallery. The edition was overrun and the 268 dishes outside the edition (all varieties except dinner plates and cups) were purchased by the artist (per letters between Lichtenstein and Jackson China Company dated February to March, 1977, RLF Archives).

In 2013, the Roy Lichtenstein Estate, in collaboration with the Art Production Fund and the department store Barney’s New York, reissued this dishware with slight variations in weight and shape (but not in decoration) in an edition of 250; each underside is marked to identify the plates as an Art Production Fund/Barney’s New York production with the Roy Lichtenstein Estate copyright.
