Tapestries without a known edition number were designated "unkn" by the authors and numbered in the order listed on a Modern Master Tapestries royalty summary dated January 19, 1982 (RLF Archives). Ed. unkn05 was originally declared the artist copy, then exchanged for the official AC in 1974. There was a special extended edition (SE) produced for several architects and their clients.
The authors designated one tapestry as the publisher copy since it was owned by the publishers. Another tapestry was designated as the HC because it replaced an earlier HC damaged by moths. No explanation was found for why Castelli has one tapestry inventoried both as LC 531-B and ed. 13/20. The tapestry could not be located, it might be the smaller version, RLCR 1510.
The authors were able to connect most tapestries with their respective auction sales. This was a challenge when auction records did not illustrate the piece that was actually sold. For example, we were unable to confirm the tapestry sold at Sotheby's Arcade, New York, November 7, 1997, lot 398.
For unauthorized tapestries manufactured posthumously see UNAUTHD (RL 0181*).
